It is the every beginning to a new year. And it is a great time to get into the issue of who Jesus is. The Jesus that this Gramma has come to know and love.
Jesus, the skin in which God came to live and move and have his being.
Jesus, the Creative Word, spoken at the beginning of time. That became flesh! To be the mouth piece for saving the world from stupidity.
Who was born in a manger thousands of years ago. To save us from the limited imagination of the human mind. A mind that craved/craves attention, status, and yes, authority. A mind that thinks in terms of winning through battle.
This Word became flesh to initiate a radical change in that mind.
Most all of us know of Jesus’ physical beginnings here on earth. And we are all familiar with the various event of his death and resurrection. But few are familiar with his life in between.
One of the question I would ask Confirmation students, after years of Sunday School. And a few “grueling” years of confirmation class was: “What can you tell me about Jesus? But it can’t be about his birth or death.” Most often I would get blank faces. Even though they had sat through year after year of stories. Their minds never seemed to register the information!
People claim to be Christian -- and indeed they are. But don’t ask them to teach little children in Sunday School, or play Bible Trivia. Actually, if the truth be known, even well versed pastors cringe when Bible Trivia is suggest as the game of the day.
What Jesus taught ,and what Jesus did, and how he lived and treated people somehow gets lost between his birth and death.
People in the modern world just have too many other things to fill their minds. Too many things they “really need to know.”
So for the next few months you will begin to understand what this Gramma has learned about Jesus and what he came to teach us about life.
And! It is not the Jesus I learned in kindergarten!
