Have you ever thought about how powerful the word yes? And the power of the word no?
I was just thinking about it. When we say yes to something we are open to possibilities. Possibilities that no stunts.
In the TV show Grace and Frankie they agree to say yes to everything for a few hours of one night. It was a comical evening.
If you are familiar with the show you know that Frankie and Grace are two very opposite woman. They dress, think, act and move opposite.
However for one night they both have to agree with the other’s requests. The rules of the night are that neither of them can say no.
Yes, it is a crazy game, especially considering the extreme differences between those two woman.
However, the idea can cause the mind to wonder about the large gap between a yes; and a no.
Let’s wonder together about when we say yes, yes to others; or yes to ourselves.
As positive saying yes is, can be, just the easiest thing to say. Easy, because it keeps the peace.
However, it also limits the possibilities of the one saying yes. That is, it is important to be honest with yourself as well as being nice to the request.
You see, culturally we are conditioned to be nice. To agree with others so as to not create tension.
Consider for a moment when the word no is healthy. When we say no to someone, or something; and say yes to ourselves. The immediate thought is: “I am just being selfish.” Or it gives us the feeling of being mean or unkind.
Wrong.
Sometimes we need to say yes to ourselves. Yes to the possibilities of how such permission allows us time to rest, and take care of our own needs.
When we do that, say yes to our own needs, we are allowing ourselves time, and energy, to do for others when needed.
Yet, saying no can also be for your own good — your own wellbeing. Because when we constantly say yes, to others, we limit our own thoughts and feelings.
Yes opens up life to a wide range of possibilities.
No limits.
But the is a huge however in the word no.
The truth is sometime the most healthy word do say is no.
Now that I have completely put confusion in your mind, let my offer the theological connection.
Jesus said yes to the most impossible request of his young life. It happened that night in the Garden of Gethsemane. When Jesus faced, what must have been the scariest thing in all of life, his own death.
And he said yes!
What would have happened if he had said no.
