Of all the things that we humans get our shorts in a knot about, there is one that
overshadows them all. The greatest debate in the history of the world has been
consistently centered around the character of the God who created all that is.
That is an interesting truth isn't it?
Shortly after contemplating that thought I read this line, from a prayer written by Ted Loder, "..how thin the layer of what we know, how thick the overlay of proud assumption..."
The two thoughts are rolling around in this simple mind not willing to be quieted; because there seems to be something extremely bold about assuming to know anything for sure, about the One who is, by nature, unknowable.
And yet, even saying that is an assumption I am making.
The truth, as I know it, is that since the very beginning of time -- the very beginning -- the human creature has tried to claim an impossible wisdom. Clearly a "proud assumption" -- a seemingly well educated opinion about who God is and what God is like.
I can't help but wonder if our safest stand is to be silently willing to confess that what we think, what we believe, how we reason and assess, are quite simply our own. Our own limited knowledge on any given subject. Period!
Debating about God, and God's character, and God's behavior, is just a "chasing after the wind." As we read in the book of Ecclesiastes.
A useless exercise.
7 All human toil is for the mouth, yet the appetite is not satisfied. 8For what advantage have the wise over fools? And what do the poor have who know how to conduct themselves before the living? 9Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of desire; this also is vanity and a chasing after wind.(Eccles. 6)
Now my mind has made a huge jump; and I am trying to imagine the realm of "cyberspace." The out there of nothing, yet everything possible. A place of many unknowns. And yet we humans have taken residence, maybe a possession of sorts, of this seemingly void place.
Listen to the definition of cyberspace: ".. refers to the virtual computer world, and more specifically , is an electronic medium used to form a global computer network to facilitate online communication...." (techopedia)
Just bear with me, on this, for a moment. How in the world did the human mind just begin to decide to use an-unknown-somewhere to build a computer network?
Just take over an uncharted space because.
With the goal, by the way, of creating bettering world communication. WOW!
Somehow there is a dichotomy of sorts here. A duality. The human mind, who can't agree on much, has harness a space that only God has been privileged to inhabit. It has been, until recent years, God's space. Now we have intruded on it to create "better communication."
Imagine.
Here is where I am connecting all of this: Centuries ago God came into the human-inhabited space called earth. God came, in the skin of a baby boy, in order to have better communication with His human creation. Came to live in our so-called-earthly-space to enable better understanding.
Now we have left this earthly space to better our communication with each other. To find a more common way to connect through wireless communication.
Intriguing!
Extra-ordinardinally intriguing!
I wonder if this cyberspace adventure will bring the human being into some clearer understanding of God? The God who, in the beginning, created both heaven and earth?

As a gramma who taught, and preached, about this God for almost thirty years; I must confess that I can not begin to claim perfect intelligences concerning the charter, and workings, of this One who is beyond knowing. Unknowable intellectually or otherwise.
I can tell you that I believe in God. And, I believe that God is tender, loving, forgiving, understanding, accepting etc. I can do that.
I can tell you what I believe -- have faith in.
However to actually have undeniable, un- challengeable, knowledge of God is not within the realm of my brain's possibility.

I must claim ignorance on that subject; as well as many others I dare to try to verbalize. And I will further suggest that would have to be the case -- ignorance -- in every and all issue that people today debate with such vigor.
